Elizabeth Mittelstedt, daughter of Frederick Mittelstadt and Amanda Hoover Mittelstadt, was born 26 July 1862, Dover Township, Fayette County, Iowa. The first public record we have of Elizabeth is the 1870 Federal Census, Eldorado, Dover Township, page #11, dwelling #81, family #81. She was enumerated in the household of her father, "Fred Middlestadte" age 36*, born Prussia, and his wife "Jane." "Lizzie" is shown as age 8, born Iowa; the household also included "George," age 2, born Iowa. (Note: according to the obituary of "Fred" Middlestadte, his wife was Catherine.) *(Other records show "Fred Mittlestadt" to have been born in 1827.)
The 1880 Federal Census of Dover Township, Fayette County, Iowa, lists this same family on page 58B, dwelling #89, family #89. "Fred Mittlestadt" is now age 53, born Berlin; his wife, "Jane R." is age 27 and born Bavaria. George is shown as age 12; "Eliza" is age 18; and additional household members are Frederick age 9; Augusta age 8, Emma age 6, and Henry (?) age 2.
Elizabeth was named as an heir in the will of her grandfather, Jacob Hoover; she was referred to as his granddaughter, Lizzie Johnston. She was not mentioned in the will of her father.
A photocopy of a document entitled "Return of a Marriage to County Clerk" bears the information that Lizzie E. Mittlestatte, daughter of Frederich Mittlestatte and Amanda Hoover, age 19 years on next birthday, married as her first husband, George Perry Johnston on 16 September 1880 at Dover Township, Fayette County, Iowa. The groom is listed as age 32, born Ohio, and the son of John Johnston and Sarah Tope. The bride and groom signed the document as G. P. Johnston and L. E. Johnston. Witnesses were W. A. Johnston and Mrs. W. A. Johnston.
A brother of George Perry Johnston married Mary Hoover, sister of "Lizzie's" mother, Amanda Hoover.
George Perry Johnston, son of John Johnston and Sarah Ann Tope, was born 23 Oct 1847 in Ohio and died 1 Aug 1899 in South Dakota. Elizabeth Johnston died 20 March 1939 in Montana.
