Our first public record of George Henry Eaton is the 1856 Iowa State Census, Lee County, in the household of his father, John M. Eaton. On that census, George's name is totally indecipherable, but appears to be Leouy. The census taker entered age as 6, but did not enter either male or female. It did show the six-year-old as having been born in Pennsylvania.

The family Bible shows George Henry Eaton was born 3 August 1850.

The 1860 Federal Census, Lee County, Iowa, lists George H. Eaton, age 8, born Pennsylvania, in the household of his father, John M. Eaton. The 1870 Federal Census of Williams Township, Benton County, Missouri, lists George Eaton, white, male, age 19, farmer, born Pennsylvania, in the household of his father, John Eaton.

The 1876 Missouri State Census, Benton County, Township 43. Range 21, lists the following information. EATON, George 21/45, Louisa 21/45, John -10.

The 1900 Federal Census, East White Township, page 132A, Supv District 7, ED 10, Sheet B4, Enumeration Date 8 June 1900, lists the household of George H. Eaton as follows:

This census record states six children had been born and five were living. The three living children not listed in the 1900 census are, presumably, John (shown on the 1876 census), Lacy, (who was enumerated in 1900 in Lindsey Twp as S. Girl, age 19), and Laura Bell (mother of the granddaughter, Ruby.) Laura Bell must have been living elsewhere at the time of the 1900 census. We know from Louisa Eaton's obituary that the child who died before 1900 was female. Her birth could have occurred before the birth of John or between any of the other children.

The child, John, shown as under 10 on the 1876 census was out of the home by 1900. According to the 1880 Missouri Soundex, John was born in 1874. He must be the J. F. Eaton listed in his mother's obituary. Information received from Kathy Eaton (granddaughter-in-law of George Eaton) indicates the full name of this person was John Franklin Eaton. His obituary is posted below.

LDS Church microfilm of Missouri records shows that Laura B. Eaton, over 18, of Cole Camp, married 22 April 1896, John Berry, over 21, of Cole Camp. My mother, a niece of George Henry Eaton, told me that she had heard somewhere, time and source forgotten, that her father's youngest brother, Aaron Eaton, had married his niece, George's daughter, and left Missouri, never to return. Someone had allegedly said to Aaron, "you know this will break your Mother's heart." Eva (Eaton) Riddle, another niece, states, "Laura Bell Eaton married John Berry, Cole Camp. John and Laura Bell had a girl named Ruby Bell Berry. Her dad died when Ruby was 5 or 6 years old, about 1902, Laura and her girl Ruby left Mo. when Uncle Aaron did and was never heard of again." We have found no record to indicate that Aaron Eaton & Laura Bell (Eaton) Berry were married. It appears likely that Laura Bell Eaton is the "Mrs. Charles DICKERSON of Tulsa referred to in her mother's obituary.

Cecil (Eaton) Hoover also told me that she thought her Uncle George had a daughter named Lacy. In 1984, I saw a letter my mother had received from a Dove Borchers in 1979. The letter said Mrs. Emma Statler, Lacey's granddaughter-in-law, was interested in genealogy. The 1900 Federal Census, Benton Co MO, Lindsey Twp, Pg 58, lists a Lacy (or Lucy) Eaton, S. girl, age 19, Single, born MO, Father born Iowa, as a housekeeper in the household of Marion Cole. LDS Microfilm #945726, Benton County MO, lists a record showing Lacy N. Eaton, over 18, married 3 March 1905, L. G. Wear, over 21, of Lincoln. The 1910 Missouri Miracode has a listing in Pettis County, P.O. Sedalia, for Lon G. Ware, 28 born Mo.; his wife, Lacy, age 28 , born Mo.; and their son Gordon, born Mo., age not recorded. We also have a copy (not dated) of an obituary for Lacy N. Wear, which was published in a Kansas City paper. It gives her birthdate as 20 Sep 1880; her parents as George and Louisa (Hughes) Eaton; and her husband's name as Alonzo Wear. (See obituary below; we also have a photo of the tombstone.)

The child Sanfred, listed on the 1900 census as having been born July 1886, also appears on the 1910 census with his parents. He is shown as Sanford J., age 24, born MO. One relative states that Sanford Eaton, a nephew of Grafton Eaton, was living around Lequire, Haskell County, in 1918. Information from this person's daughter-in-law indicates that his full name was Jessie Sanford Eaton and that he was born 19 Jul 1885, and died 4 Apr 1944. (See obituary below.)

The child Georgia, listed on the 1900 census as having been born April 1890, is not in her father's household on the 1910 census. She was probably married by that time. We did not find a marriage record for her in Benton County, Mo. "Lue" Eaton's obituary lists a daughter, Mrs. J. T. Phillips of Sedalia. The 1920-21 Sedalia, Mo., City Directory has an entry for, "Phillips, James T. (Georgia), electric Mo Pac, h 805 E 11th. We have no further information about this person.

The 1910 Missouri Soundex, Benton County, has an entry for George H. Eaton, age 50, born Penn.; wife Rachel A., age 57, born Va.; and son Sanford J., age 24, born Mo. The age and birth place of "Rachel" match those of Louisa Eaton. It would seem likely that a mistake was made in the name of the wife.

Cecil Hoover told me that when she was eleven or twelve years old, she went with her father to visit his family in Missouri. She said her Uncle George was a farmer but had a lot of sheep.

Combining the above information, we can reconstruct the family of George Henry EATON and wife, Louise HUGHES as follows:
