Amanda Hoover, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Rosier) Hoover, was born about 1841, probably in Logan County, Ohio, and died 17 December 1864 in Fayette County, Iowa. Friederich Mittelstedt was born in Prussia on 12 July 1827 and died 24 February 1899 in Iowa. Amanda Hoover Mittelstedt is buried in the West Union Cemetery, West Union, Fayette County, Iowa, near her parents. The inscription on the tombstone is that she died December 17, 1864, age 24 years, 10 months, and 23 days.
Amanda was shown as age 19, living in her father's household on the 1860 U. S. census. She married Friederich Julius Mittlestadt about 1861 as their only child, Elizabeth, was born 26 July 1862. Elizabeth is listed on the 1870 census in the household of her father and his wife. She is shown as being eight years of age. Amanda Hoover Mittelestedt died of typhoid fever. Family tradition says that she contracted the disease while caring for Civil War soldiers.

"Frederick Julius Mittelstadt was born in Prussia in 1827 and emigrated to this country in 1857. After three years in Wisconsin he came to Iowa in 1860. September 22, 1862, he enlisted in Company C, 6th Iowa Cavalry, then being raised by L. L. Ainsworth, was mustered into the service on the 6th of October following, and served with the company until this regiment was mustered out October 17, 1865. . . . . . . . After returning to this country he acquired a home north of West Union and married Miss Catherine Reisner*, daughter of Christ Reisner, deceased, and here he lived with his family until his departure from this world, February 24th. A faithful wife and eight children, five sons and three daughters survive him. His comrades served as bearers and honored their deceased friend by their presence at the funeral services held at the Baptist church Monday afternoon, Rev. Albert officiating. . . . . . "
*1870 and 1880 Census records list the name of his second wife as Jane R. Another researchers has the name as Johanna Reisner.
